South Tyneside Council

South Tyneside Council is the local authority for the metropolitan borough of South Tyneside in Tyne and Wear, North East England. It has been responsible for local government services since 1986, following the abolition of Tyne and Wear County Council. The council operates from South Shields Town Hall and has been under Labour majority control since 1979. The council is made up of 54 councillors and is led by Chief Executive Jonathan Tew. It is a member of the North East Mayoral Combined Authority, which was established in 2024 to manage strategic functions across the region.
